When God’s word of love and forgiveness breaks through
“You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you” (Psalm 86:5).
What an encouraging message this is! Our heads go down. We look into ourselves, and we’re filled with despair. We wonder, “Is there any hope for me? We see our many sins. This fills us with negative thoughts. What are we to do with all these negative thoughts about ourselves? We must take them to the Lord in prayer. We ask the Lord, “What do you have to say about me?” The Lord hears all that we say about our sins, and he says to us, “It’s all true. You are a sinner. Again and again, you have let me down. You have done your own thing. You have not walked in my ways.” Then, he says something else to us. He says to us, “Have you forgotten about my love? Have you forgotten about my forgiveness?” As the Lord speaks to us about his love and his forgiveness, a change takes place in us. We begin to think less about our sin, and more about our Saviour. We call upon the Lord. His love flows out to us. His forgiveness reaches us. We make a new beginning with him. Again and again, we will need to hear the Word of the Lord: “You, Lord are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you.” Again and again, the Lord will speak to us words of love and forgiveness. In our hearts, there will be less of the sadness that comes to us, because of our sin, and more of the gladness that comes to us, because of his salvation. “You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call on you”: Think about this, and let your heart rejoice in the Lord and give the glory to him.
