A Father’s Counsel

(Today is Grandparents Day)

As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind…”

1 Chronicles 28:9a (NASB)

I remember my father’s advice to me when I was a lad; it was to stand with honour amongst men, be truthful in what you do and say. These were good words which helped me become the man I am, but they missed the most important lesson which thankfully I learned later from my mother and grandparents. My first counsel lead me into a life of pride in self, but the counsel of Godly family introduced me to a new purpose – serving God my Heavenly Father.

In the above verse David is nearing the end of his days on earth, and wasted no time in giving Godly counsel to Solomon his son. to find the knowledge of God whom his father served and to serve Him completely. Further to this David makes it known that God knows all Solomon’s heart and thoughts, and that if he seeks to know God He will allow Solomon to find Him. As in all parental advice though, David warns Solomon that if he rejects God…He (God) will reject Solomon! This is solid advice indeed; follow God and do good, or reject God and you will pay for it.

Dear reader, as parents and grandparents we have the same duty as David to share Godly counsel with our children. I would go one step further and include aunts and uncles; I have good reason for this, my aunt Betty bought me a book for Christmas one year that introduced me to the facts of the gospel with great effect. Godly counsel is not just verbal instruction brethren. What counsel are you giving to the young in your family today?
