Walking With God
Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
GENESIS 5 : 24 (NASB)
…Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.
GENESIS 6 : 9 (NASB)
I have been a keen walker all of my life, even though in recent months I have had little opportunity to ramble about the woodlands. There is something spiritual about walking with a friend in the countryside. Over the years I have enjoyed walks with brothers in Christ, the beauty of Creation always unlocked whatever needed to be discussed or prayed about. My local walk which is not far from my house is Formonthills Woodland and just a bit further takes me into the Lomond Hills, usually on a long sunny day. You just can’t beat being outdoors close to Almighty God and His Creation. Often I have walked on my own physically, but spiritually my Father God is always present beside me. These walks with Him are very effective at recharging my spiritual batteries, strengthening me for what trials await me.
Walking with a close friend or with God is a mutual experience, a time of sharing, listening and sacrifice. It is sacrificial in the sense that we must surrender to our walking partner, in love and time. It is an intimate fellowship of minds and hearts. This was the reality of both Enoch and Noah in our texts today, they walked in total surrender with God each hour and every day. Their lives were one long walk seeking and following God, whatever the cost. Choosing to walk with God incurs a cost in our life; as I was writing this I read Conrad’s (“Lock Your Wings”) post on Isaiah 51 which has an accurate description of the cost of walking with God: “In our walk with the Lord we will encounter insults. We will be ridiculed and omitted from being invited to attend events. We will be made fun of and our desire to uphold the faith will be questioned. But we have hope…we can then know that the insults and ridiculing that we face for our faith today, will be minuscule compared to being in the glory of our Heavenly Father!”
Dear reader, do you walk with God in your daily life? Do you surrender your all in seeking Him every day? He promises in His Word,
“I love those who love me;
And those who diligently seek me will find me.“
— Proverbs 8:17
Seek Him in His Word and in your prayers, and you shall find Him walking with you daily wherever you may go.
