Our Purpose in Life
According to the Bible, human purpose begins with the act of creation. In the book of Genesis, it is written, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27, NIV). Being created in the image of God implies that humans have inherent value, dignity, and a unique role in creation.
One of the primary purposes given to humanity is to be stewards of the earth. Genesis 1:28 states, “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.'”
The purpose of life, according to the scriptures, is to know God, love Him, and live in accordance with His will. Jesus Christ summarized this purpose in what is known as the Great Commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37, NIV).
In addition to a relationship with God, the Bible highlights the importance of relationships with other people. The Great Commandment includes a second, equally important part: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39, NIV). This commandment underscores the significance of community, compassion, and service to others.
Believers are called to serve others and to be a light in the world. The Great Commission, given by Jesus before His ascension, instructs His followers to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19, NIV).
The Apostle Paul writes, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (2 Corinthians 4:17, NIV). This assurance motivates believers to persevere and remain faithful to their divine calling.
