A Reason to Shout & Sing!
“GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST,
AND ON EARTH PEACE AMONG MEN WITH WHOM HE IS PLEASED.”
Luke 2:14 (NASB)
On this Monday morning I am excited to share another great hymn that I sang for the first time in church yesterday. How applicable today’s hymn is for a Monday; that day of the week that many folk are loathesome of for any of a number of reasons. The hymn I speak of is “WE ARE NEVER NEVER WEARY OF THE GRAND OLD SONG” by Fanny Crosby (1820-1915). What a blessing I received yesterday as we sang this jaunty hymn of praise!
The story of its writing can be found in Fanny Crosby’s autobiography (published 1906), where she describes a visit with friends to the home of William J. Kirkpatrick (American hymnwriter). “Once while on a visit to William J. Kirkpatrick some of us were talking of how soon we grow weary of earthly pleasures, however bright they may be. “Well” remarked the professor, “we are never weary of the grand old song.” “No,” I replied, “but what comes next?” he hesitated and I said, “Why glory to God, hallelujah!” Mr. Kirkpatrick sang an appropriate melody and I wrote the hymn:
We are never, never weary of the grand old song;
Glory to God, hallelujah!
We can sing it loud as ever, with our faith more strong;
Glory to God, hallelujah!
Dear Reader, many and varied are the tides of this life on earth – fashions come and fashions go. But praise God our Father is unchanging, and His promises are set in granite for eternity! Whatever the beginning of your week contains, if you are a blood bought child of God you have a real reason to shout and sing today!
We are going to a palace that is built of gold;
Glory to God, hallelujah!
Where the King in all His splendor we shall soon behold
Glory to God, hallelujah!
