His Breath of Life

THEN THE LORD GOD FORMED MAN OF DUST FROM THE GROUND, AND BREATHED INTO HIS NOSTRILS THE BREATH OF LIFE; AND MAN BECAME A LIVING BEING.

Genesis 2:7 (NASB)

Today’s favourite verse from the Creation story in Genesis never fails to astound me. The Creator, Almighty God who has spoken Creation into existence applies the personal touch to the creation of mankind. He physically forms Adam’s body from dust and breathed life into him; effectively the first kiss of life to an inert body.

It took over 1700 years before man thought to do the same with lifeless individuals. It was in 1773 that an English doctor named William Hawes who first practiced artificial respiration on people saved from drowning. William Hawes and another doctor named Thomas Cogan who also studied this new lifesaving method, went on to form the Royal Humane Society who which championed the cause of first aid practice. Today the practice of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is a finely tuned lifesaving technique practiced by many professionals and volunteers worldwide, saving many lives every day.

Dear Reader, ponder the immensity of the actions of Almighty God that day in creating Adam – do you know anyone who can take some earth and create a functional body? Even the best advances in 21st Century genetic engineering can’t come anywhere near what God did on that hallowed day thousands of years ago. Adam was still a lifeless miraculous creation, until God breathed His breath into him…giving Adam a soul. Each time we take a breath it is the direct descendant of that first breath…think about that! All praise and glory to Almighty God, our true Father!
