Comfort At Christmas

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NASB)

As Christmas approaches the nights are dark and getting colder as we plunge into the depths of a Scottish winter. This is the season to seek comfort in our centrally heated homes with a hot cuppa. Yet there are those who suffer specifically at this time of year, either tortured by painful memories or from mental health issues impacted by winter darkness – comfort may seem far off for these folk. “Paraklesis” is the Greek New Testament word for “comfort” used in today’s verse; being a calling to one’s aid, to encourage. Maybe we know someone who is suffering this Christmas season, that we can come alongside to their aid?

Almighty God our Father is the Master of comfort, coming alongside us “in all our affliction.” His comfort, lifting us out of the darkness, is like a one pot meal…there is plenty for everyone! His masterpiece of comfort for all men is Christmas itself; His Son coming from Heaven’s halls to a humble stable, beginning the work of Divine Redemption for sinful man.

Dear reader, are you in need of comfort, needing someone to come alongside you this Christmas? Your Father God is nearby, call out to Him – He will hear your cry, and answer it.
