Faith at Christmas
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.
Hebrews 11:1-3 (NASB)
This morning as I walked through the shopping centre in Glenrothes I was surrounded with reminders of Christmas; the oversize decorations in the mall, the huge decorated tree decked out in lights, and the endless stream of jingling background music. It is hard to miss, even at home the tv or radio assault us with more reminders of the season. In this world all these are little to do with the Christ of Christmas, but rather an attempt to have us consume and spend more. But in all this I am thankful for today’s verses, which return my heart to my foundation in Him – the true reason for the season.
The world may have hijacked Christmas, but as I look at the star on my tree I am reminded where my faith rests – in the truth of Salvation born in Bethlehem. I cannot see the manger or my Lord as a baby, but I celebrate in my heart with the shepherds of long ago – I kneel before Him as they did. In faith I believe God’s Word about Him, The Word made flesh who lived, died and rose again to redeem sinners such as me, and you. In His Word God makes promises and He keeps them all. For me there is no greater reminder of the value of His promises than that of a rainbow; over the centuries they have assured us of promises kept, past, present and, future.
Dear reader, we may only see the world before us today but we can be assured of His presence by the working of His hand in our lives. The evidence of His compassion is seen in the pages of our Bible, and in the history of this world which confirm His Word’s accuracy. We may not see Him, but the evidence of His existence and love for us is there for us to see.
