My mother-in-love grew up in a large family. Her mother, Mary, had LOTS of kids to get ready for school every morning, and—as you can imagine—some days were easier than others.
On those hard days, it could be a slog, and a bad attitude was contagious. But Mary had a simple line that she used to help them stay on track.
On those days when they were at each other’s throats, she would quote this line from Psalm 118 to them: “This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it” (with an emphasis on “will”).
We will rejoice.
I love this. She taught them that our happiness is a choice.
In effect she was saying, “Choose to thank God for today and be joyful. Despite the complaining, the noise and the fear of what could happen, choose joy. Make it a great day.”
So, today—this one glorious day, that God has gifted to us—we will rejoice. We will see the difficulties and the challenges for what they are: opportunities to thank Him for this once-in-a-lifetime day.
And a beautiful day it is. Happy Friday, y’all!
