Knowing The Way
Proverbs 16:9 (NASB)
This morning I had to take the family car for its annual MOT Test (UK) of roadworthiness, during which I have a chat with my friendly mechanic and wait for my ordered taxi to take me home again. Our chat was soon interrupted by my phone ringing; it was the taxi driver reconfirming the address, no problem I thought and duly gave the garage address. We had not long resumed our conversation when I received another call from the taxi driver asking where I was, that he was parked outside. My friend and I looked out the window, there was no one there. I assured the driver he was in the wrong place which he strongly denied, and we parted company. My friend called me a taxi from another company which arrived very swiftly; here was a guy who knew where he was going and how to get there fast.
As I was driven home in comfort by a much more pleasant driver than I had chatted to earlier, the subject of knowing directions was going around in my head. If there is a job where you must know your direction it is a taxi driver surely; the famous London Taxi driver training called “The Knowledge” comes to mind. My first driver today definitely lacked “The Knowledge” of Glenrothes! But a more important knowledge is described in the above verse from Proverbs; that is the knowledge of God and the directions in His Word. Towns and streets change as does the knowledge required to navigate them, but the Word of God and His directions are always the same.
