The Love That Motivates
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’
Mark 12:30 (NASB1995)
Today’s verse is a challenge for us; do we have our priorities in order – is our first priority to love God who knew us before we were born? Jesus gives our text as the first commandment, which we can read in Exodus 20. It is worth reading in the warning against worshipping idols that God warns His children, “for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God,” (Exodus 20:5).
As I meditated upon this, I was struck by the sad truth that many who attend churches do so out of duty or, worse, seeking social status points in their community. The reason that should motivate anyone attending church is their pre-eminent love for God, who loved them first.
Dear Reader, we seek the company of those we love in life and do anything for them; how much more should we love Father God who sent His Son to save us? What motivates your service, status, or complete love of God?
