It’s A Matter of Taste

O taste and see that the Lord is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! — Psalm 34:829

I must admit I do look a good cookery show occasionally, particularly those that the cook has to create from basic ingredients. Often a part of those shows is a wine recommendation where the resident expert tests and describes various candidate wines. Wine tasting is a comical looking process of tasting (with sound effects!), spitting out and drinking water to cleanse the palate for the next wine to test. I have seen the same process used in tea tasting too; it is the best way to separate the good, average, and bad flavors.

On a personal level I am renowned in my family circle for my ability to bear hot chili or curry flavors, because over the years I have trained my palate to take such extreme tastes. What I call quite mild usually gets criticized as raging hot by the family, which makes for some funny scenes of them trying to cool down. The same is true on a spiritual level too, we need to taste the Word of God on a daily basis. In tasting God’s Word with a cool glass of prayer to accompany it we train our spiritual palate in the things of God. In contrast we could taste the wrong things in this world and train our spiritual palate in the ways of sin which then become the norm.

Dear reader, be careful what you consume each day; the food of this sinful world or the food of Holiness. I pray that you will choose to train your spiritual palate in the things of God; in consuming His Word with a cool drink of prayer every morning. You will find it is a pleasant taste that grows sweeter with age, just like a fine wine
