What You Really Have
By Tom Arn
I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” Psalm 16:2
Accumulating things is the passion of many people. They can never have enough things, the newest toy, the newest car, the newest clothing fashion, the newest music or movie, or more of something they already have.
When Christmas season comes around, the majorities talk about the ‘joy of giving’, but many would be very upset if they did not receive something, or did not get what they wanted. During the few days after Christmas, the stores are filled with people returning unwanted gifts.
The same type of thinking occurs throughout the year, at birthdays, Father’s/Mother’s Day, anniversaries, and any other special occasions. People something more. They can never get enough and are never completely satisfied with what they do have.
In today’s Psalm, David writes that God is his master and ruler, and without Him, he has nothing good. David was totally content with God and God alone. He had learned that he may have everything in the world, but without God, all those things were worthless and not really good.
For many people, being content with God alone is a difficult thing to do. The pressures of this world push a person to want or “need” more things. Fear of not having something drives many people to want more or get more. The things of this world will only be temporary and will fall apart, wear down or break, and none of them will really satisfy your soul.
As a believer, if you have truly met with God, you will know how great God is and how loving He really is. You will realize that only God can give you true life. It is God, alone, through Jesus, that can give you the hope, life, and satisfaction that you are looking for.
Look to God who has given you the breath of life. He is the one who created everything that is. Without God, everything is meaningless and of no real value. With God, the things He gives you has value, both now and for eternity.
Be content with what God has given or not given you. Seek God and Him alone and He will give you the satisfaction and life you desire.
I pray today that you will have a personal relationship with Jesus; that you will know the blessings God is giving you; that you will be content with God alone; and that you will seek God first in your life.
~ Happy New Year! ~
