Thought For Today: “Jesus’s First Words”

It’s exciting when you hear a baby’s first words, and we usually end up recording them, either through some recording device or in some sort of memory book. These are important words.

Now we know Jesus’ last words on the cross. They are recorded for us in both Luke’s and John’s gospel accounts.

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do…It is finished.” (Luke 23:34; John 19:20)

But, while we also know Jesus’s first words, we don’t really pay as close attention to what He is saying.

When Jesus’s mother, Mary, was searching for him as a child in Jerusalem, they found Him speaking to the teachers in the Temple. She asked Jesus, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” (Luke 2:48)

Jesus replied, “Didn’t you know that I had to be in My Father’s house and about My Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49)

Jesus is still about His father’s business in the house of God, the church, as He said, “Where two or more are gather in my name, there I am in the midst.” (Matthew 18:20).

But what came to me besides this is that if this was Jesus’s first words and first concern, then shouldn’t it be ours as well? If it was important to Jesus that it be recorded, shouldn’t it be important to us?

Just a Thought: A son is part of the Family Business.

Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house? Luke 2:49
