A Meeting Place
My God in His lovingkindness will meet me… PSALM 59:10a (NASB)
My young Christian life wasn’t an easy one, I struggled with many issues on a daily basis. I had returned to the village after a time away, and it was soon after the death of my dad. Through circumstances I found myself alone in a place hostile towards my God. A way of coping for me was to escape to the fields and woods that surrounded our village on three sides, where I would spend hours walking and birdwatching. But it was a whole lot more than that, it was also a meeting place between me and Almighty God.
Often my walks were either early mornings or twilight when there were fewer folk around, but plenty wildlife for company. One favorite place to escape was reached by walking up the grassy fields past the sheep and cattle to what had been a pit. It was a wide area of three flat areas on different levels which were fast growing into birch woodland. The area was crisscrossed with a series of narrow paths and steep banks between the flats. It was my personal sanctuary from the world. I had one spot sheltered amongst trees atop of a central bank, from which I could sit sheltered from the wind and look out over all the flats before me. The only sound was the wind in the birch branches and the musical scales of warblers, I felt close to Heaven in that place.
I remember one specific day when I was down on the lowest flat walking between the grass and trees, I was praying as I went. I can’t remember the specific reason why but I was seeking His presence in that moment, I needed Him beside me. As I prayed this I turned a corner and there before me was a deer standing in the middle of the path looking at me, neither of us moved for what seemed like an age but must have not been more than a minute. Then calmly it just turned and strolled into the deep woodland, leaving me standing there. I am as convinced today, years later, as I was that day that I met with God. That incident was a direct answer to my prayer that day, which I thanked Him for and praised Him. I haven’t been to that place since my youth, and indeed I cannot always manage woodland walks, but I do have places where I endeavor to meet with God as often as I can.
