Driftwood on The Shore
For this reason, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. HEBREWS 2:1 (NASB)
On Saturday I ventured out to the beach at Leven, in the hope that the sunshine and the sea breeze would ease my pain and tiredness. It was bracing for sure, the wind off the estuary was quite cold but bearable if I kept moving. The tide was fully in and the rhythmic sound of the surf was a pleasing sound as I walked the waterline. As I walked along occasionally, I looked down at the various things washed onto the beach, shells, pebbles of various shapes, seaweed, and driftwood. I looked with interest at some of the small scraps of driftwood, most of it was pale grey and very smooth. It occurred to me that there were any number of places that such driftwood came from; the Forth is nearly ten miles wide at Leven. Driftwood can come down the coast from the north and into the Forth and has been known on rare occasions to originate from across the Atlantic Ocean. As I briefly looked at the driftwood it reminded me that if we are not careful as Christians, we too could be driftwood.
I fished my phone out my pocket and did a Bible search right there on the beach, looking for “drift” references which instantly threw up today’s verse! As the famous hymn says “we have an anchor that keeps the soul” – in this instance it was clear to me as I stood there that our anchor is the Word of God. We must grasp it, read it, and listen to it often, applying it to our lives. In it we find the instructions of our Father God for daily living, to keep us safely anchored in His harbour.
Dear reader, take care not to become driftwood in this ungodly world. Stay anchored in His Word every day, lest you be driven by the tides of evil that buffet your shoreline. Keep your father’s instructions close:
Do not let them depart from your sight;
Keep them in the midst of your heart.
