Have You Been Reckoned?

The word “reckon” is used by the Apostle Paul several times in chapter four speaking about Jesus’ righteousness being counted and imputed unto us by faith (Romans 4:2-25).

“Reckoned” is an accounting term implying something being charged to someone’s account.

In chapter six Paul is again using this word talking about how a believer is reckoned to be dead to sin and alive in Christ.

“Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:11)

And so, by faith we are reckoned, counted, identified, not only in Christ’s death, but also in His resurrection. And when we are, then we are reckoned, counted, and identified with the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ.

Are you convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are indeed dead to sin and alive to God through faith in Jesus Christ?

“This is a faithful saying: for if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him.” (2 Timothy 2:11)

It is such a conviction on the part of every believer that will help them along this journey of faith and keep them from walking continually in sin.

“How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? … Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin.” (Romans 6:2, 6-7)

So, the question is, “Have You Been Reckoned?”

As I read this, I realize that before there is a resurrection, there has to be a death. There is no way to be alive in Christ without dying to the sin that He gave His very life for upon the cross for all of us. The apostle Paul tells us also in Romans 6:1-2, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” And also 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
