The Battle Belongs to The Lord
Now Jericho was tightly shut because of the sons of Israel; no one went out and no one came in. The Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the valiant warriors.
Joshua 6:1-2 (NASB)
In current news we see the brutal siege of Mariupol in Ukraine by the Russian army. This siege has been a long and evil attack since its beginning on the 24th of February. I also remember the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, 1992-1996. Both acts of war resulted in much pain, terror, and loss of life for innocent civilians caught in the midst of battle waged by evil men. Today’s scripture reminds us of the siege of Jericho by the Israelites after crossing the Jordan river into the land promised them by God; this was a righteous siege by God and His chosen people.
God led the Israelites to their first battle against their enemy; a mighty walled city with a professional army inside – by human standards this would be no push over. Indeed, Jericho stood securely behind two walls, the outer wall being bigger than the inner wall. God promised the Israelites complete victory over this formidable enemy; they only had to obey His instructions which amounted to what we today would call a prayer walk around the city for six days. On the seventh day the people called out to the LORD, the mighty walls of Jericho fell. Archaeology shows a unique thing happened…the walls of Jericho fell outwards! They were literally blown down from within the city; and God kept His promise to deliver Jericho into the hands of His people.
Dear reader, you may be looking on a fortress in your life just as Joshua looked upon Jericho. Despite his human trepidation facing a formidable enemy, God promised him a victory. Your Father God calls you to trust Him as Joshua did; keep praying and leave the battle up to Almighty God. Do not fear Satan’s fortress of evil before you; the battle belongs to the Lord!
