“The Highness of God”

Whenever we come into the presence of royalty, the usual response is, “Your Highness.” But when it comes to God, to refer to Him in this manner, while right and proper seeing He is the ruler and king over the universe, it falls kind of short. 

God is so far above our puny thoughts of His grandeur. Look at God’s description and His words from the prophet Isaiah.

“For thus says the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place.’” (Isaiah 57:15)

We also see that God’s rule is far beyond our ability to even imagine. 

“‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ says the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.’” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

King David praises God’s Highness saying, “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power and the glory, the victory and the majesty; for all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as head over all.” (1 Chronicles 29:11)

When Isaiah saw God he declared, “I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.” (Isaiah 6:1)

And upon seeing God’s Highness declared, “Woe is me, for I am undone! … for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.” (Isaiah 6:5)

God is so far above any of the small thoughts we think about Him, even when we declare His majesty. 

So, what can we take away from our study on the Highness of God? 

The Lord gives us this to ponder as He finishes His thought in Isaiah 57:15 saying, “I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.”

Therefore, while God lives so far above us, He also in His majesty lives within all of us who believe in Jesus.
