The Spirit of Courage
ARE-SCRIPTED REPOST FROM THE DEVOTIONAL TREASURES PAST.
For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NASB)
How often have we been in a tough situation being persecuted for who or what we are? I have experienced this in my life, based on appearances, religious background or simply refusal to conform to worldly ways. Being mannered in our humanity alone can make persecution all the harder to bear, that was the suggestion regarding Timothy in Paul’s letters.
In our previous post we began with God as the benefactor of our spirit. Not a spirit of fear but of courage, able to discern the differences between truth and evil. This spirit enables us to withstand all that the world throws at us from day to day. It is not “a spirit of timidity,” which J.N. Darby translates as “a spirit of cowardice.” The servant of God must be bold and courageous before the servants of Satan in this world, fear must not intimidate us into submission. Let us look at what God’s Word advises when under attack.
In Matthew 10 Jesus instructs the disciples on the ways of service and discipleship, just before sending them out to preach. Within this chapter there are three “fear not” instructions which also apply as good counsel against timidity:
1) Fear not! God reveals the Truth to His own in times of questioning or persecution (Verse 26).
2) Fear not! God holds your soul secure in Heaven’s throne room, out of man’s reach (Verse 28).
3) Fear not! God provides for your every need in all circumstances, at all times (Verse 31).
Dear reader, pay heed to the advice from Paul to Timothy in his letter. Do not be timid before Satan and his agents as you face them daily. Your Father has equipped you with courage to withstand all attacks, with the promise of further provisions at His Divinely appointed time.
