Time With The Grands
By Bill Herried
Each generation tells the next
Great is the LORD! He is most worthy of praise!
No one can measure his greatness.
Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts;
let them proclaim your power. —Psalm 145:3–4
Love spending time with my grandchildren. Yesterday, toward the end of the day, one of my grands was in my office looking for things to play with and found a couple of things and made a story out of it.
But what she pieced together shocked me.
The first thing was a piece of art showing Jesus washing Peter’s feet, and the other was a business card holder with a couple of golf clubs, crisscrossing each other. I wasn’t actually paying attention until I heard her say, “Would you like to go with us, Papa?” Totally unaware, I looked over and said, “I’m sorry, what was that?”
She said, “Jesus invited Peter to go across the street to play hockey. But right now he’s washing Peter’s feet before they go play. Would you like to go with us?”
“Wait, what?!” I thought. This is a tiny cast of Jesus washing Peter’s feet, and here were the first thoughts that raced through my mind: “How did she know one was Jesus, and the other was Peter?”
But, beyond that, here is what she imagined: Jesus was inviting his friend—and she was inviting me to join her and Jesus—to do something together: to play hockey!
“What?!” I thought.
“Of course,” I said out loud. “We don’t want to miss play time with Jesus!”
Where did she learn this? From those dedicated people who teach in her Kidz Church time each week.
One of our goals as parents and grandparents is to tell the next generation—our own offspring—of God’s goodness and his mighty power. And I am so thankful for the dedicated teachers that we have at CenterPoint to give wisdom and guidance in their lives—because they will need it in the years to come.
But I couldn’t help thinking of what she had pieced together in her young mind: that as Jesus spent time with his disciples, he wants to spend time with us in our everyday lives: at home, at the store, at church and even playing hockey.
as Jesus spent time with his disciples, he wants to spend time with us in our everyday lives
And that is what disciples do: connect others with Jesus. With one hand we reach out to Jesus and with the other we bring a friend.
Wow.
I hope you have a great time in worship this weekend and don’t miss the opportunity to bring your little ones with you to hear of God’s goodness and power, so they can grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ.
Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts;
let them proclaim your power. —Psalm 145:4

As a pastor and grandfather, I love this account! As scripture says, “A child shall lead them.” Praise God for this child reminding us that Jesus wants to spend time with us in our everyday lives as He did with His disciples.
Amen, Tom!
“A child will lead them.” So good. My grandchildren are teaching me these days! Thanks for your feedback Tom.
