Sisters and brothers, people will come into and move out of your life.

Some will leave through earthly circumstances, others by their own choice, and some through death. People leave us because they choose a path of sin. But people also leave because God is sending them elsewhere to do His work. Sometimes people leave and we don’t really understand why. Too many times I have seen Jesus followers utterly distraught because people they loved dearly are no longer a part of their daily lives. Can I tell you it’s ok to grieve the loss of the close relationship? But can I also remind you that our hearts must be bound to God more than any human being? The only One who will never leave us is our Lord. He is the one constant, the comforting and loving Holy Spirit inside us. Please beloved, do not let your heart be so dependent upon another human being that the grief from their loss could drive you away from the Lord. Yes, of course we desperately love our spouses, our children, other family members, and our best of friends. But we must love the Lord above all, or we are in danger of walking away and not loving Him at all when our human relationships end.

Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. John 16:32 ESV

Jesus Himselflearned about the loss of loved ones; there is an ancient thought that when Joseph died (his foster father here on Earth), he died in the arms of the two he loved the most (Mary and Jesus). He grieved when He was informed of the death of John the Baptist, He called the dead back from the grave. He knew death, and that it was all leading to the events of Good Friday and Easter.
