Before the Bell Rings: A Grandfather’s Prayer

It’s amazing how a loving embrace, a few words, and heartfelt prayer can calm an anxious heart

6 min read

It’s hard to believe school has already begun. The kids here in Mississippi only had two months of summer—do you remember when we had three? I sure do, and I savored every moment.

As I’ve shared before, my 11-year-old granddaughter still asks me to brush her hair before school. She’s entering sixth grade this year, and her heart was full of questions: Would she still see her friends? Would the teachers be kind? I remember those nerves—and those teachers too.

After brushing her hair, she leaned back against my chest. I wrapped my arms around her and whispered, “I love you. Don’t be nervous—you’re walking with God.” Then we prayed.

It’s amazing how a loving embrace, a few words, and heartfelt prayer can calm an anxious heart—hers and mine. Yes, this old grandpa still gets nervous when his grands start school.

So, let’s be intentional. As Christian grandparents, we have the privilege of helping our grandchildren transition into new grades, new friendships, and new challenges through prayer. If you can, pray with them. And if their first day is still ahead, start praying now. Cover their hearts, their teachers, and their friendships in prayer.

Thanks for sharing Andy. We must always give hope. It is a powerful, God-given quality that can lead to healing and a more purposeful life. Hope, rooted in the understanding of God’s goodness and the reality of spiritual Truth, is not a mere wish but a confident expectation of good.

Thank you for the comment, Isaac. You are so right that we need to thank God for the hope He gives us and to pray for our children and grandchildren they navigate life.
