Today’s 333 Devotional: “Into the Light”

Vetting is what health officials put racing horses through to verify their health and soundness before being allowed to race. Vetting is also the process used for those entering the political arena. It’s where every aspect of a person’s life is scrutinized to the highest degree. Nothing of their past or present is kept in the dark but is brought into the light.

Jesus said of our lives, “For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. Therefore, whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.” (Luke 12:2-3)

In the preceding verse, Jesus tells His disciples to beware the leaven of the Pharisees, which He identifies as hypocrisy (verse 1).

Webster’s defines hypocrisy as “the false assumption of an appearance of virtue or religion.”

Jesus was saying that the Pharisees say one thing while living another. They gave the appearance of being righteous and upholders of the Law but were its worst offenders.

We may appear righteous in our Sunday best and Christian-ease language, but what’s brought out, because nothing can be hidden for long, is that we’re often worse than those outside the faith.

Of the Jews God said, “You did not walk in their ways nor act according to their abominations; but, as if that were too little, you became more corrupt than they in all your ways.” (Ezekiel 16:47)

The Apostle Paul said, “It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles.” (1 Corinthians 5:1)

We all sin, and we all have skeletons in our closet that we don’t want exposed. But Jesus tells us to stop being hypocritical about it, and instead humbly admit our sin. And remember, the same way we judge others is the same way that we will be judged (Matthew 7:1-5).
