Mighty Men of God

By Alan Kearns

Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.

1 Corinthians 16:13 (NASB)

Today I want to share a deep passion that burns in my heart. From the night I surrendered my life to Christ in 1984 I have been passionate to share my Lord and Saviour, even to the point of being seen as an embarrassment and a nuisance by some. I wanted to tell the Good News to everyone, men and women. My first historical hero of the faith was General William Booth of The Salvation Army; a man who lived and breathed the Gospel for all people, and particularly for the poor. As I grew in my walk with God I realised that there was a distinct contrast between mighty men of God in history that I was reading about, and the modern man of God. How much we need an army of William Booths for God in 2022!

Through my Christian walk I have been blessed by mighty men God; a host of brothers from Bethany Hall and Cowdenbeath Fellowship of the Brethren church, Harry Wigglesworth, Rev. Tom Richters, Mark Evans in my time in Stockton-On-Tees, Hank John in Newcraigs Fellowship, and Rev. Bob Brown in Cowdenbeath. This list is not complete…God is good! I remember when I first heard of Angus Buchan the South African Farmer/Evangelist, here was an ordinary working man ministering to hundreds of thousands of young men at his own farm. When Angus speaks there are no heirs and graces, he tells it what it is to be a man for God.

One the greatest memories for me is the two years I attended a national men’s conference in the Glasgow city hall. Both years hundreds of Scottish brothers packed the venue to hear keynote speakers on Christian manhood, and to join in fervent worship of our God. It truly was a spine tingling experience which awakened many men to the reality that God is calling a generation of men to stand tall for Him in a hostile world.

Dear reader, just yesterday I was chatting with a brother on this subject. We reflected on how rare it was for men to meet together to pray, read the Word, and to worship God. Certainly this wicked world with it’s twisted gender bias has played its part in decreasing the value of men in society, and especially Godly men. What can we do about this? First we must pray that men are raised up and filled with Holy courage. Second encourage one another; women of God encourage your men. Third, men of God, stand up and be counted! Men of God need to meet together regularly, even in twos and threes, great oaks begin with an acorn brothers!

“Every man dies, not every man really lives.” William Wallace

“Duty is the essence of Manhood.” General George S. Patton

“Stand true to your calling to be a man. Real women will always be relieved and grateful when men are willing to be men.” Elisabeth Elliott

Very true. I have two sons. And, it our desire to see them growing in their faith, living in fear of God, and maturing as men of God. May they be leaders in their home someday that brings the light of Christ to their wife, children, and the community.
