The Dawn of Hope

And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 2 Peter 1:19 ESV

One little known secret of being a senior is that the older we grow, the more losses we experience. We lose grandparents, then parents: sometimes brothers or sisters and sadly, even children. Each time it feels as if our life is standing still, only it isn’t. Before we know it we gently tuck away the memories of both happy times and hardships that we shared with those we loved, and we go on. The sun rises, people go back to their jobs, and in some moments we wonder when our turn will come. But the Apostle Peter shows us that as Christians, we are not meant to be morosely waiting around for death. Instead our privilege as God’s children is to walk through every circumstance with the light of Jesus. Rather than becoming more burdened with each loss, Peter encourages us to remember that with God’s help our paths grow brighter, and brighter. He compares it to how the morning dawns. The sun doesn’t just zoom up into the sky, but rather it gradually brightens our world a little bit at a time. In the same way, the hope and joy that God offers us will become clearer to us if we trust Him, no matter the losses that we face. Then when the morning star rises in our hearts the love of Jesus will overcome our darkness every time!
